Ashtakoota · Guna Milan

Kundli Matching

Ashtakoota Guna Milan scores eight factors out of a maximum of 36, all derived from the two Moon positions. This is a traditional compatibility method that has been in use for centuries — it is not a scientifically validated predictor of relationship outcomes, and it is only one input among many that families consider.

The rules this page applies

Every koota is scored by an explicit, deterministic rule. The same two birth charts always produce the same 36-point breakdown.

varna
1 point when the groom's varna (from his Moon rashi) is equal to or higher than the bride's, on the order Shudra < Vaishya < Kshatriya < Brahmin. Otherwise 0.
vashya
2 points for the same vashya group; 0.5 for a Manav–Jalachar pair; 0 when one is Vanachar (Simha) and the other is not; 1 for every other combination. Dhanu and Makara are split at 15° per the classics.
tara
Count from the bride's nakshatra to the groom's and back; each count is divided by 9. Remainders 3, 5 and 7 are inauspicious (0), any other remainder scores 1.5. Maximum 3.
yoni
4 points for the same yoni animal, 0 for the seven classical sworn-enemy pairs (Horse–Buffalo, Elephant–Lion, Sheep–Monkey, Serpent–Mongoose, Dog–Deer, Cat–Rat, Cow–Tiger), 2 for every other pair. (This is the simplified three-tier form of the yoni table.)
grahaMaitri
Natural friendship between the two Moon-sign lords: mutual friends or the same lord 5, friend–neutral 4, neutral–neutral 3, friend–enemy 1, neutral–enemy 0.5, enemy–enemy 0.
gana
Classical Gana table. Same gana 6; groom Deva & bride Manushya 6; groom Manushya & bride Deva 5; groom Rakshasa & bride Deva 1; any Rakshasa–Manushya pairing 0; Deva–Rakshasa 0.
bhakoot
0 when the two Moon rashis are 6/8, 5/9 or 2/12 apart in either direction; otherwise 7.
nadi
0 when both partners share the same Nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya); otherwise 8.
